Job Summary

Clinical Exercise Program Assistants help patients with chronic disease and disability with therapeutic exercise regimens. This may include aerobic conditioning, strength training, active and passive stretching exercise, and balance and ambulation. The position may also include clerical duties such as exercise data entry in patient records.

Qualifications

High School Diploma, or equivalency; Interest in health care or fitness related field; Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service; Enthusiastic attitude toward fitness and exercise, and effective communication skills.

Students majoring in health related fields or persons with experience in rehabilitation services and exercise training preferred. Current Basic Life Support Card or completion of certification within one month of hire.

Completion HIPAA certification during first week of employment.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated vaccination requirements, or be approved for an exemption, prior to the first day of work. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Essential Functions

  1. Prepares equipment and treatment area for patient care.
  2. Directs patients to appropriate treatment area.
  3. Assists patients with transfers on/off exercise equipment.
  4. Performs equipment adjustments as needed for individual participants.
  5. Provides general supervision of exercise activities including monitoring of clients during exercise to assure safety and to provide verbal feedback as necessary in regards to proper execution and form.
  6. Monitors vital statistics pre-, during and post-exercise including heart rate, blood pressure and blood glucose measurements and reports adverse reactions.
  7. Conducts manual stretching exercise for clients
  8. Ensures safety of patient in clinic at all times, but also aids with balance and ambulation activities.
  9. Assists with record keeping of clinic data.
  10. Maintains clinic cleanliness and organization.

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Seldom: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids).

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking, standing, walking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), sitting. 

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
