Job Summary

This position is responsible for promoting excellence in patient care by advancing quality and scope of practice through clinical education. It assists and acts on behalf of the manager in planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating intra- and inter-departmental activities. It also successfully performs duties of the Staff Development Educator in delivering training and education and representing clinical perspectives on interdepartmental meetings. With input from the director, the supervisor is responsible for administrative decisions in the absence of the manager. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law.

Qualifications

Required

• Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

• Basic Life Support Health Care Instructor card through American Heart Association.

• Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah or another clinical area.
• Four years of direct clinical experience.

Preferred

• Master's or other advanced degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated vaccination requirements, or be approved for an exemption, prior to the first day of work. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Essential Functions

• Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates clinical education for general department needs and for the organization.
• Represents the department and organization's educational interests through committee, task force, and project participation.
• Acts on behalf of the Manager to coordinate staff assignments and make decisions on department operations. Demonstrates strong and effective managerial techniques/skills in established lines of authority.
• Demonstrates maturity and accountability for job performance.
• Supports and promotes excellence in customer/guest relations. Troubleshoots and resolves customer concerns.
• Assesses areas of personal and professional growth for team members and assists in staff performance evaluations. Mentors and coaches team members.
• Functions as a resource/consultant for new employees, students, clinical departments, educators, and leaders.

Problem Solving

• Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
• Knowledge and experience in organizing and conducting formal adult education programs.
• Demonstrated teaching, coordination, and communication skills.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills.
• Possess and demonstrate a high level of computer skills and be able to teach and support the instruction of the organization's electronic medical record and other clinical computer systems.
• Ability to provide leadership in clinical education, clinical research, and patient education while functioning within the scope of the Hospital's policies and procedures.
• Ability to function independently, demonstrate higher level problem solving and decision-making skills due to the varied and complex issues encountered by the incumbent. The incumbent regularly interacts with all levels of licensed and non-licensed personnel.
• Ability to anticipate needs and guide the educational programs for nursing. The Staff Development Educator acts as catalyst for change and interacts with the unit/department, division, and ancillary departments.
• The expected amount of actual bedside or clinical care will be dependent upon the area and projects for which the incumbent will coordinate educational activities.
• Demonstrate and maintain the knowledge and skills necessary to provide clinical education to the staff on his or her assigned area or project.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

Comments

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

• This position involves light work that may exert up to 20 pounds and may consistently require light work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects involving patient care or medical equipment.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
