Job Summary
The Certified Tumor Registrar has demonstrated expertise in registry functions and serves as a resource for the design and operation of the registry. Assists with reports, performs audits, and provides training. This position also codes, stages, abstracts all cases of cancer and certain benign tumors initially seen, diagnosed, and/or treated at University of Utah Hospital & Clinics (UUHC) and School of Medicine within the guidelines of the Utah State Health Department, Utah Cancer Registry, American College of Surgeons (ACoS), and other applicable regulatory body requirements for statistical analysis of cancer incidence, mortality, and treatment protocols in local, state, national, and world databases. Performs data entry utilizing specialized software. Ensures compliance with Cancer Registry related policies and researches and resolves Commission on Cancer (CoC) standard deficiencies. Maintains a current knowledge of staging, coding, and abstracting standards and requirements
Qualifications
National Tumor Registry Certification is required and five years experience as a Certified Tumor Registrar or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
Demonstrated clinical competence and in-depth knowledge of specialty area; and demonstrated leadership, teaching, research and communication skills are required.
The incumbent will be expected to maintain current certification and meet the continuing education requirements.

Essential Functions
1. Identify, researches, plans, develops, implements with dept/individual collaboration on regulatory standards, and provides appropriate timely response to inquiries, questions and/or concerns.
2. Abstracts and reviews cases of malignancies and certain benign tumors diagnosed and/or treated at University of Utah Hospital & Clinics a Commission on Cancer (CoC) accredited facility, National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Cancer Program, and National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) member for addition to the tumor registry database per local, state, federal, and other required regulatory body guidelines.
3. Codes, stages and enters into the computer each case added to the tumor registry utilizing ICD-O, ICD-10, AJCC TNM (Tumor, Nodes, Metastasis) & Collaborative Staging and Coding, FORDS (Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards), and SEER (Surveillance of Epidemiology and End Results) guidelines.
4. Complies with state and federal mandates that require UUHC to report all diagnosed and/or treated malignancies and certain benign tumors.
5. Participates in the quality management of the registry data and activities.
6. Compiles data and generates reports for special studies and annual reporting.
7. Provides caregivers and ancillary support staff with guidelines on complete and timely documentation & CoC standard compliance.
8. Contacts patients, providers, & state registries per the database to gather follow-up information and verify or correct patient information.
9. Assists in the development, review, and training of Cancer Registry & Cancer Committee policies & procedures to staff, health care providers, and Cancer Committee.
10. Evaluates and reports record keeping performance to Manager, Cancer Committee, State and Federal Regulatory Agencies.
11. Ability to organize and lead teams.
12. Assists in the recruitment and hiring of personnel.
13. May facilitate educational meetings, internal and external.
Problem Solving
The Certified Tumor Registrar (Senior) is a subject matter expert with intricate knowledge of the compliance standards for the Cancer Registry and Cancer Committee and recommends policy and procedure changes based upon the discretion of the Cancer Registry Manager. Problems would be referred to superior based upon predetermined guidelines set by Department Cancer Registry Manager. The Certified Tumor Registrar (Senior) works with all levels of UUHC/HCH/HCI clinical and administrative staff. The Certified Tumor Registrar (Senior) also works with consultants, vendors and regulatory agencies.

Risks & Benefits: This position has the potential for a significant impact on funding and compliance if regulatory guidelines are not met (i.e. fines, grant/contract awards, data quality/clinical research, accreditation, market share, etc.).
Utah State Cancer Reporting: Rule, R384-100 and Administrative Rule HSS 124.05, which requires every hospital to report all malignant neoplasm’s that are diagnosed and/or treated within 6 months of diagnosis or initial visit.
Grants: Accurate casefinding and coding/abstracting data facilitates reliable information retrieval to assist in earning grants and contracts.
Research: Accurate and complete data is required for research studies investigating incidence, prevalence, risk and risk factors, and epidemiology of cancer.
Performance Standards: Adheres to the established UUHC Behavior Standards.
Work Environment & Physical Demands: Standard Office Environment. Ability to sit for long periods of time. Ability to perform occasional light work including standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 10 pounds.
This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.
