Job Title: Fire Prevention Specialist

Job Summary

Conducts specialized plan and construction reviews for fire prevention and life safety. Executes and evaluates systems while complying with federal, state and local codes. Supervises technical staff and schedules fire alarm and sprinkler system testing.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree in Engineering or related field plus three years experience in fire safety evaluations and plan reviews or equivalency required. Demonstrated knowledge of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC) and State Fire Prevention Rules and Regulations regarding system testing and maintenance required. Demonstrated computer skills, human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Incumbent must obtain a Utah State Fire Marshals Office Class A Certification for testing and maintenance of fire sprinkler systems within six months of employment.

A current Driver’s License is required to perform duties.

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field and International Code Council Plans Examiner certification are preferred.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

Essential Functions

  1. Implements and manages fire alarms and sprinkler system testing.
  2. Conducts plan and construction reviews for proposed projects.
  3. Conducts area evaluations and inspections to determine compliance with IBC, IFC and State Rules and Regulations.
  4. Implements and evaluates fire safety project issues.
  5. Investigates fires and unsafe conditions and implements changes.
  6. Conducts auxiliary and assembly fire drills.
  7. Trains staff on proper use of department system testing databases.

Problem Solving

The position has the responsibility to resolve all fire alarm problems. The incumbent works with architects, engineers and departments to incorporate building and fire code life safety features into assigned construction projects. This position has the authority to visit any construction site or research project and stop the work in progress if it poses a direct threat to the preservation of life or property. The incumbent has the decision making capacity to evaluate all technical fire alarm system proposals for compliance with University standards and make a recommendation regarding installation and use. The position has the authority to assign field technician fire alarm system testing priorities and make changes to the testing schedule.

Comments

Incumbent may be required to work extended hours and provide on-call coverage.
