Job Summary

Assists campus surveyors gather field data by operating standard surveying equipment. Creates and maintains engineering data files.

Qualifications

One year of full-time map drawing and surveying/drafting experience or equivalency; the ability to perform general mathematical calculations; the ability to use surveying equipment including levels, theodolites and EDM; and demonstrated effective communication and human relations skills required.

Experience working with computers and CAD or other drafting software preferred.

Essential Functions

  1. Pinpoints the location of utility lines on campus, both at the time of their construction and thereafter; creates and/or updates detailed and accurate maps which include the size and locations of these campus utilities and/or other campus features by utilizing standard surveying and drafting equipment and procedures; and maintains this information in a way that promotes data accessibility.
  2. Uses standard surveying equipment and techniques to locate existing utilities prior to excavation for repair or new construction; and provides detailed and accurate information regarding the size, distance and location of all campus utilities for both on- and off-campus construction personnel.
  3. Uses standard drafting equipment to prepare scaled base maps including contour and cultural features for the campus and its housing areas.
  4. Approves requests for and issues digging permits to on- and off-campus construction personnel, reviews areas to be excavated, and provides Engineers and related personnel with detailed information in a useable format in order to prevent utility damage.
  5. Uses a pipe finder and researches field books and old campus maps to assist Surveyors accurately verify the location of buried utilities including water, gas, sewer, communication, electrical, storm drains, HTW water, steam, oxygen, etc.
  6. Coordinates with Plant Operations personnel to facilitate appropriate and timely building and campus utility shut-downs.
  7. Assist on horizontal, vertical, design, topography and new building survey work for consultants, contractors and campus personnel.
  8. Assists surveyors maintain campus survey monuments and coordinate points and descriptions.

    Comments

    This position requires the ability to work outdoors. The incumbent may be exposed to heat, cold or other adverse weather conditions in the course of completing the essential functions of the position. He/she may be required to work in tight spaces or at heights more than six feet about the ground in order to gather data.
