Job Summary

Provides expert sheet metal services to all University departments by designing, making, installing, and repairing products made of sheet metal or related building materials to established specifications.

Qualifications

One day comprehensive examination; successful completion of an approved 4 year, 8,000+ hour accredited apprenticeship program in sheet metal work, or four years professional sheet metal experience, or equivalency; demonstrated customer service skills; and oral and written communications skills required.

Essential Functions

  1. Designs, constructs, installs and repairs ducts, fume hoods, exhaust fans, guttering, flashings, cadaver tables, and a variety of metal products by applying sheet metal worker skills at the journeyman level to accommodate the requesting University departments.
  2. Operates sheet metal machines such as cutters, breaks, cleat formers, rolls, folders, hand crimpers, soldering irons, spot welders, and a variety of other machines and hand tools, to cut and shape new and parts for old equipment in accordance with accepted sheet metal practice.
  3. Determines appropriate materials by reviewing sketches, plans, blueprints, and specifications for use in the construction of new equipment.
  4. Consults with departments to formulate designs and dimensions of new equipment by using creative and innovative skills in order to provide the necessary equipment to the requesting departments.
  5. May act in a lead capacity to instruct new employees as to the procedures used by a sheet metal worker.
  6. Ensures that metal products are constructed in accordance with prepared designs and drawings as specified by the department.
  7. Provides assistance to departments in preparing drawings to visualize a piece of equipment needed which cannot be purchased.
  8. Provides guidance to apprentices to insure that they are able to learn the trade in an efficient manner.

    Comments

    The incumbent in this position is required to do a great deal of creative and innovative thinking. He/she must be able to deal with and communicate with people in many departments in order to understand their needs and explain possible solutions. Development and fabrication of new equipment is a major part of this job.
