Job Title: Police Sergeant

Job Summary

The Police Sergeant provides direct support to police operations in the areas of traffic, patrol, protection of life and property, criminal investigations, security services and special programs. This position is responsible for the instruction and first-line supervision of security personnel and provides effective police service to the University community. Under the general direction of a Police Lieutenant or Police Captain, supervises subordinate police and/or security personnel and may oversee specific shifts or specialized police units.  This position frequently performs the same duties as police officers and other security personnel.  

Qualifications

Certification as a Category 1 Peace Officer and four years police experience working as a Category 1 fully sworn police officer; Demonstrated communication skills and a commitment to providing excellent customer service.

At least two years experience in a University setting is strongly preferred. Associate degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field, completion of police supervisory/leadership certificate program and/or field training officer experience is also preferable.

Successful completion of FEMA courses NIMS 700, ICS 100 and ICS 200 preferred.

Essential Functions

  1. Supervises the activities of subordinate police and/or security personnel
  2. Plans, coordinates, and evaluates the operation and goals of police assignments
  3. Carries out staff management activites by evaluating employee performance, initiating disciplinary action, and making commendation recommendations.
  4. Exercises direct command in a manner that assures order, appropriate conduct, discipline, and efficiency
  5. Ensures compliance with departmental standards
  6. Schedules and organizes the work of subordinate personnel
  7. Disseminates criminal and administrative information to subordinate personnel at shift briefings
  8. Reviews and analyzes reports prepared and submitted by officers for accuracy, completeness, and essential elements
  9. Maintains positive community relations and department image
  10. Investigates and resolves complaints, both internal and external
  11. Identifies training needs, and conducts training for department personnel
  12. Performs criminal investigations
  13. Perform duties as Incident Commander
  14. May assist with media releases

Problem Solving

Incumbents in this position are expected to make most decisions independently, without consulting a higher authority, during non-business hours.

Comments

Category I POST certification is obtained by completing a 15 week intensive course in all areas of law enforcement conducted at the Utah State Police Academy.
