Job Summary

Performs supervisory responsibilities for security operations for the University Campus and Health Sciences Center by managing daily activities. Directs personnel involved in establishing, promoting and maintaining security and property protection.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; five years experience in the position of security corporal or related management experience or equivalency; a proficient knowledge and understanding of current electronic security equipment (proprietary alarms, CCTV systems, computers, etc.); and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required.

Combination of campus and hospital security experience is preferred.

Essential Functions

  1. Coordinates day to day operations of the Security Department under the supervision of the Lieutenant including attending meetings pertaining to safely and security.
  2. Directly supervises corporals in the Security Department for the University campus including the Health Sciences Center buildings and Huntsman Cancer Institute. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training personnel; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining personnel; addressing non-criminal complaints and resolving problems.
  3. Ensures adherence to established rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  4. Ensures adequate security is provided in the patrol of all campus buildings designated Research Park buildings, University Health Sciences Center buildings and Huntsman Cancer Institute.
  5. Coordinates with corporals in the administration of discipline where a command decision is required by consulting with those involved and issuing a recommendation to facilitate a conclusion.
  6. Maintain vehicle maintenance records for security vehicles.
  7. Coordinates and maintains work schedules.
  8. Ensures security incident reports and statistical data is completed properly and submitted on time.
  9. Initiates and coordinates new programs pertaining to proper security patrol and procedure to ensure current and effective methods are used.
  10. Ensures training records are maintained on all security officers.

Problem Solving

The Security Sergeant has the authority to direct security operations and the daily functions on the University campus. This includes Health Sciences Center buildings and Huntsman Cancer Institute as directed by the Security Operations Manger.

The incumbent has the authority to restrain combative patients, detain persons suspected of criminal activity, make recommendations for hiring or disciplining staff, evaluate performance, and recommend pay increases for subordinate staff. He/she has the authority to inspect areas where departments want to install alarms systems and make recommendations, and either approve or disapprove requests.

The incumbent will directly supervise 5 corporals and 44 security officers.

Comments

The incumbent is exposed to stressful situations that result from human behavior and hostile situations that may become assault threatening, necessitating the use of physical force.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects tools or controls. May be required to climb or run up/down stairs, kneel crouch or crawl, and talk or hear with hands and arms. Must be physically capable to restrain a combative patient.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust vision with corrective measures, if applicable.

The Security Sergeant is on-call 24 hours a day to respond to and handle security operation problems or emergencies.
