Job Summary

Ensures the efficient, safe and proper operation of the High Temperature Water (HTW) Plants, water temperature distribution system and related equipment. Analyzes and treats various HTW problems for the campus.

Qualifications

Three years experience in a hot water or high pressure steam plant as a maintenance mechanic or systems operator or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; mechanical abilities and an understanding of thermodynamics required; demonstrated human relations, effective communication skills and a commitment to provide excellent customer service also required.

Water treatment experience preferred.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

Essential Functions

1. Ensures the HTW Plant remains operational 24 hours a day in order to provide continual heating, domestic hot water and steam for the University community.
2. Maintains proper soft water conditions by testing and physically regenerating water softeners. Maintains the function of brine solution through the outside salt tank, related pumps and electrical switches.
3. Responds to emergencies to protect the HTW System including underground pipeline repairs to keep down time to a minimum.
4. Maintains, rebuilds and repairs generators, pumps, valves and system heat exchangers and equipment.
5. Inspects, lubricates and repairs heat exchangers. Replaces gaskets as needed.
6. Maintains and balances pump operation by installing, packing and aligning shafts and impellers, and replacing mechanical seals for the temperature water values.
7. Monitors equipment, pumps, pressure gauges, blow down tanks and vessels.
8. Monitors and records readings of water, gas and electric meters.
9. Opens and closes large and small valves in confined spaces. Lubricates gate and globe values.
10. Maintains and cleans HTW Plant.

Problem Solving

The incumbent ensures proper operational control of the HTW System during normal and emergency activities. This position is responsible for taking proper action by containing failure and restoring back to normal operating perimeters.

Comments

This position has extreme danger potential and the containment to the HTW Systems are imperative. Immediate emergency response is required, often times under difficult conditions. Incumbent may be required to provide on-call coverage. The incumbent may be called in at any time to perform emergency repair work. He/she must be able to function under a rotating shift system and work in a continuous noise-producing environment.
