Job Summary

Conceptualizes, writes, edits and implements integrated communication strategies and packages for various University constituencies, both academic and administrative. Provides editorial direction by coordinating the production of manuscripts, dissertations, thesis analysis, University bulletins and brochures.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Liberal Education or a related field; two years professional experience in editing and directing publication projects, or equivalency; and demonstrated writing, human relations and effective communication skills in order to interpret and present sometimes opposing information in a convincing and non-confrontational manner are required.

Master's degree may be preferred in some areas.

Essential Functions

  1. Designs and directs all aspects of document production for academic and administrative departments.
  2. Edits materials submitted for publication to ensure consistency with University and departmental guidelines and standards.
  3. Proofreads publications throughout the production process including press checks—the final check before production.
  4. Researches and organizes data that is to be incorporated into the final draft of the publication.
  5. Acts as a liaison between requesting departments and the technicians who deliver the final product to promote realistic and mutually understood expectations.
  6. Provides editorial and design assistance to University departments as requested.
  7. May publish instructional guides that outline policies and standards pertaining to thesis and dissertation style acceptance.
  8. May perform various supervisory duties.

Problem Solving

The incumbent must address discrepancies between the material a customer submits and publication requirements and standards and negotiate revisions and an acceptable content; this can be confrontational if not handled is a diplomatic manner. Documents must be reviewed for adherence to policies, for plagiarism and/or falsification of data. He/she is often responsible for establishing project production schedules and determining when to move from one stage of the process to another. Accommodations for last minute changes are subject to the discretion of the incumbent.
