Job Title: Video/Film Editor

Job Summary

Performs as broadcast and multi-media editor, and in collaboration with production teams designs and executes the creation of broadcast quality television programs, interstitials, promotional spots, segments, announcements and underwriting credits for local, regional and national distribution. Creates stand-alone multi-media elements such as promotional spots and program trailers and/or repackages programs into multi-media formats appropriate for radio, print, and social media platforms and web delivery. Creates graphics, layered complex effects, and uses digital color-correction techniques to design and enhance the overall look of a project and/or fix any problems that might have occurred in the field.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Communication, Film or a related field, or equivalent work experience in broadcast television; two years of demonstrated professional experience in the operation of digital/non-linear editing systems; experience with graphics/VFX software; familiarity with CODECs and compression basics and related software; familiarity with all aspects of television video and audio production including field and studio applications is preferred. Familiarity with PBS and FCC rules and regulations guiding content and presentation of television programming for broadcast is required. The ability to work under deadline pressure, to make creative decisions, be motivated and organized to meet deadlines while assuring high technical and aesthetic standards is required.

Essential Functions

  1. Edits video and audio using digital editing systems consistent with the guidance of program Producers and Directors.
  2. Provides technical, specialized and aesthetic advice on project plans and designs in order to meet production needs.
  3. Measures and corrects video pulse widths, color balances, video levels, chroma delay, burst phase and chroma phase to assure compliance with aesthetic requirements and broadcast standards. Assures that productions adhere to department and university policies as well as FCC rules and regulations regarding technical standards.
  4. Recognizes and corrects audio difficulties including improper levels and poor sound quality to enhance the sound presentation. Consults with staff Audio Engineers to ensure highest audio standards on finished video segments.
  5. Designs and executes motion graphics/VFX for broadcast and online use.
  6. Performs basic maintenance and setup of computer system and related equipment; identifies and isolates technical problems within the editing system to ensure proper working order.
  7. Stays current on unfolding developments and resources in television and multi-media production and makes recommendations to the Team Leader on purchasing decisions to upgrade editing systems.
  8. Provides training to department staff on editing protocols and production techniques.
  9. Interacts constructively with production team and external clients, providing collegial and responsive customer service.
  10. May be required to augment field production staff.
  11. May assist with other production activities according to department needs and as time allows.

Problem Solving

Must be able to identify and correct technical problems which develop with video, audio and/or systems during the editing process to prevent potential technical problems from occurring; Recommends equipment needs and upgrades for the editing bays to the Post-Production Team Leader. Collaborates with production personnel/ and to provide aesthetic and content editing decisions for KUED/PBS productions.

Comments

The position does not directly supervise personnel; however, will frequently provide indirect supervision of personnel associated with supporting the editing of television productions.
