Job Title: Classroom Assistant

Job Summary

Assists teachers or other professionals in assigned classrooms and performs a variety of tasks designed to meet the physical, emotional, and educational needs of children or deliver direct services to students.  Follows directions given by the teacher and shares concerns regarding children, students, or the center, with the teacher or director.

Qualifications

This is an entry-level position. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in learning about child development and guidance; willingness to take direction from the assigned teacher; ability to pass a TB test and Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) background check. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills are also required.

A current food handler's permit and first aid training may be required in some areas.

Essential Functions

  1. Helps the children experience success in physical, social and intellectual tasks.
  2. Reinforces and broadens concepts as presented by the teacher.
  3. Observes and documents behavior, and  may offer suggestions to the teacher. Does not directly communicate with parents concerning children's problems.
  4. May assume full responsibility for the group for short periods of time when the teacher is involved in other activities.
  5. Assists teacher in activities and tasks which contributes to an orderly, clean environment for children.
  6. Meets with the teacher and staff to assist in planning.
  7. Plans a morning or afternoon small group activity with assistance of Head Teacher.
  8. Supervises playground unless specifically requested to be indoors.
