Job Title: Career Counselor

Job Summary

Educates, guides and prepares students for the transition from an academic environment to an employment career. Coordinates activities between university departments and employers. Designs and conducts workshops and supervise student internships.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a Social Science, Communication, Counseling or a related field plus three years of experience in occupational or career counseling or equivalency required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Master’s degree in a related area is preferred. Training and experience in basic testing and measurement is preferred. Experience with career counseling in the assigned area may also be preferred.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

Essential Functions

  1. Counsels students which prepares and assists students and alumni in the discovery and decision making process of selecting a career.
  2. Guides students through self-assessments, identifies available resources and assists students with career research.
  3. Supervises and evaluates a caseload of student internships providing guidance of learning goals and career development assignments.
  4. Assists students with preparing resumes, interviewing skills and searching jobs electronically.
  5. Interacts with employers for recruiting students and alumni.
  6. Conducts site visits to employers to develop and promote internships and career opportunities.
  7. Develops and presents multiple training workshops to prepare students on aspects of the employment and job search process.
  8. Conducts ongoing research to provide information and feedback about recruitment and after graduation activities for students.
  9. Maintains accurate data and produces statistical reports on job replacement, salaries, recruitment activities and other information.
  10. Assists in preparing and publishing annual reports.

Problem Solving

Counselors must solve complex problems which relate to counseling individual students who come from a wide variety of backgrounds. These individuals are making life-changing choices. The resolution comes in the form of understanding and utilizing available resources to research options and provide individualized solutions.

Counselors are involved in hiring and personnel decisions. They make decisions regarding the appropriateness of employer’s requests for job postings and interview schedules. Each counselor must be knowledgeable of employment laws and ethical standards for hiring and recruiting. Decisions are based on the adopted standards of the National Association of Colleges and Employers.
