Job Summary

Performs cabinet and carpentry work at the journeyman level by applying skills unique to the trade to make, assemble or repair cabinets, desks, drawers and other products made of wood or related building materials.

Qualifications

Successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program in carpentry and two years previous shop experience or six years professional carpentry experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Dependent upon department of assignment, a valid Utah driver’s license may be required.

This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Essential Functions

  1. Builds cabinets, bookcases, and drawers by following detailed drawings, sketches and blueprints in order to meet requests from University Departments.
  2. Installs cabinets, drawers, trim, finish work and moldings, which require a highly skilled carpenter, in completing job assignments throughout the campus.
  3. Repairs damaged and non-functional desks, cabinets, furniture and a variety of other wooden fixtures as requested by various University departments.
  4. Operates woodworking machines such as planners, table saws, cutoff saws, panel saws, jointers, routers, sanders, power screw drivers, power drills and a variety of other machines and hand tools to cut, shape, install and finish various cabinets, desks, drawers, and finish work to produce a useful item.
  5. Works with materials such as formica, plywood, pine, rough birch, rough oak, alder, fir, and a variety of cabinet hardware in accomplishing job assignments to meet specific cabinet-making requirements.
  6. May act in a lead capacity to instruct new employees or apprentices as to the procedures used by a cabinet maker.
  7. May function as a crew leader on specific assignments, by supervising and instructing other personnel.
  8. May perform other forms of carpentry work as necessary in order to help in completing specific job assignments.

    Problem Solving

    The incumbent ensures that wood products are constructed in accordance with prepared designs and drawings as specified by the department. Provides assistance to departments in preparing drawings to visualize a piece of equipment or woodwork needed and can not be purchased. The incumbent may provide guidance to apprentices to ensure that they are able to learn the trade in an efficient manner.

    Comments

    The incumbent must be aware of safety at all times due to possibility of serious injury from power equipment or on repair sites. The incumbent should also possess hand tools for use in this position. This position is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to emergencies as needed.
