Job Summary

Performs routine duties by following established procedures and instructions to complete retail sales. The incumbent may perform cashiering, customer service, or cafe duties.

Qualifications

This is an entry-level position. Training will be provided. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills and the ability to pass a security clearance is required.

Some positions require a minimum of six months cashiering experience.  A food handlers permit may be necessary, depending on department.

Essential Functions

  1. Determines cost of merchandise by obtaining price information on unmarked items so the appropriate charge can be made to the customer.
  2. Handles sales transactions for the purchase of merchandise by accurately entering prices into a cash register, and giving correct change to complete the sale.
  3. Practices excellent customer service to guests, accurately process transactions, greet guests with friendly attitude.
  4. Verifies checks received in payment for merchandise with Check-rite, or in-store list to ensure customer has funds to cover their purchase.
  5. May be responsible for answering phones or assisting with customer service / front desk requirements.
  6. Follows procedures outlined in the contract with credit card companies to ensure authorized use of credit cards for purchases.
  7. Prices merchandise for own, or other department, and/or stocks shelves and arranges displays to present a broad selection for customer selection.
  8. Maintains clean and orderly surroundings to promote a tidy and organized environment.
  9. Makes list of merchandise needs to present to the supervisor for the purpose of reordering and replenishing stock, as well as responding to customer requests for new items.
  10. May be responsible for removing trash and/or food debris as depending on department.

Problem Solving

Should this position be for the bookstore, the Retail Specialist has the authority to accept an alternative form of check, i.e. a business check where the customer's name appears, or a deposit slip when a customer has run out of checks. The incumbent may determine where to stock, and how to display merchandise.

Should this position be for the UMFA, the Retail Specialist may be responsible for an awarness of Museum exhibits, memberships, and other programs specific to the museum.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), sitting. 

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead, lifting (up to 50 pounds).
