Job Title: Associate General Counsel

Job Summary

Performs standard legal work and/or participates in the performance of complex legal work to include such areas as research, policy review, legal compliance issues, contract reviews, property sale/acquisition, employment, and/or clinical affairs. Participates and/or assists in the conduct of litigation as assigned.

Qualifications

Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and admission to Utah State bar association required. Demonstrated organizational, effective verbal/written communication and human relations skills also required.

An excellent academic record and related experience preferred.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

Essential Functions

  1. Anticipates, identifies and resolves legal issues. Counsels management in order to develop legal strategies and solutions.
  2. Drafts, reviews, and approves policies and procedures, regulations, bylaws, and other documents within legal specialty areas.
  3. Researches and analyzes laws and regulations. Educates and trains University community about legal issues.
  4. Conducts and supervises legal research and analysis. Prepares written and verbal opinions of counsel as needed.
  5. Reviews, prepares, and approves contracts involving leases, licenses, purchases, sales, insurance, employment, research and related matters.
  6. Coordinates legal services to departments and divisions within areas of legal specialty.
  7. Represents University management in administrative hearings and litigation and/or oversees such representation.
  8. Negotiates settlements involving legal issues or transactions on behalf of the University in conjunction with other University officials.
  9. Supervises support staff, more junior attorneys, and/or outside counsel on a project basis.

Problem Solving

Incumbents face the challenge of keeping current on changes to University policy, state and federal laws and regulations and the legal implications of those changes.

Some travel may be required.
