Job Title: Telecom Installation Tech 2

Job Summary

Installs, tests and repairs voice and data wiring equipment, telephone equipment or fiber optic cabling.

Qualifications

Voice and Data wiring:Three years full-time work or equivalency installing and terminating voice and data unshielded twisted cable, a basic knowledge of building design with an understanding of horizontal distribution required, the ability to distinguish colors and a working knowledge of Category 5 and 6 standards (EIA/TIA standards) and demonstrated human relations and effective communications skills are also required. Must possess a valid Utah drivers license.

Strong computer skills preferred.

Telephone Installation and Repair: Three years full-time work or equivalency, experience working with electronic key systems, a working knowledge of Centrex services, a working knowledge of PBX systems, overhead paging systems, and ACD systems, strong computer skills on windows operating system also required. The ability to distinguish colors and a working knowledge of Category 5 and 6 standards (EIA/TIA standards) and demonstrated human relations and effective communications skills are also required. Must possess a valid Utah drivers license.

Familiarity with Remedy trouble ticket system preferred

Fiber Optic cabling:Three years full-time work or equivalency installing, testing and repairing fiber optic cabling and terminations, a working knowledge and experience using all fiber optic testing equipment and all types of fiber connectors and terminations, experience in fusion splicing and strong computer skills including Excel required. The ability to distinguish colors and a working knowledge of Category 5 and 6 standards (EIA/TIA standards) and demonstrated human relations and effective communications skills are also required. Must possess a valid Utah drivers license.

A working knowledge of AutoCAD and GIS preferred.

Essential Functions

  1. Installing and terminating and testing voice and data wiring equipment, telephone equipment or fiber optic cabling.
  2. Maintaining documentation of time worked and materials used.
  3. Documents records of repairs and installations using various computer based programs.

    Problem Solving

    The incumbent completes work under direct supervision of the department manager, supervisor and/or designated project lead.

    Comments

    The incumbent is required to complete work in locations throughout the main campus, hospital, Research Park and some off-campus locations. They may occasionally be required to work before or after normal working hours to minimize disruption to departments.

    The incumbent may also be required to be on-call (after hours and on weekends) as assigned on a weekly rotating basis or for specific event coverage at University venues.
