Job Title: Spv, Clinical Laboratory

Job Summary

Provides supervision, training and scheduling of clinical laboratory staff. Prepares specimens for processing and performs tests for use in diagnosing patients’ and preparing statistical reports. Monitors department budget and supplies.

Qualifications

Associate degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline related to field of study, plus two years full-time laboratory experience or equivalency required; Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card or obtain one within one month of hire; demonstrated organized human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and previous supervisor experience are preferred.

Essential Functions

  1. Hires, supervises, trains and assigns work to laboratory employees.
  2. Draws, processes and tests patients’ samples using waived and/or moderately complex analytical tests and equipment.
  3. Monitors and controls laboratory budget.
  4. Maintains and tests laboratory equipment to ensure quality control.
  5. Orders supplies for laboratory and maintains sufficient inventory.
  6. Enters patient information and test results into laboratory information system and prepares statistical reports.
  7. Performs and documents quality control and quality assurance procedures.
  8. Ensures compliance with state and federal requirements for clinical laboratories.

Problem Solving

This position oversees the day-to-day workflow within the laboratory and resolves work flow and work process problems. Ability to meet deadlines and work under stressful conditions is required.

This position has the authority to order laboratory supplies, ensure proper quality control and review work results of other laboratory staff. The incumbent researches and makes recommendations to department administration for approval of major equipment purchases or changes in staffing levels.

This position must maintain a current knowledge of procedures and guidelines to ensure compliance within the laboratory area including, but not limited to, appropriateness of tests being ordered, quality control and quality assurance procedures and documentation, proficiency testing, disciplinary issues and staff reviews.

 

Comments

The incumbent must demonstrate clear speech, good visual acuity including color perception and mobility.

 

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
