Job Summary

Ensures the efficient, safe, and proper operation and maintenance on the steam and hot water systems including all piping, valves, and related equipment. Checks, constructs, assembles, repairs, and maintains the piping systems in order to provide adequate and safe steam heat to the various buildings on the University campus.

Qualifications

Two years experience working with steam and/or hot water heating or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); a Certificate of Asbestos issued from the State of Utah (if removing asbestos); a thorough knowledge of boiler operation, vessels and assorted devices associated with the heating system; demonstrated customer service skills; and oral and written communication skills required. A thorough knowledge of all power and hand tools required in repairing and maintaining heating systems in general. Journeyman certification is preferred.

A Certificate of Asbestos is obtained by the successful completion of a comprehensive examination after completion of four ten-hour training sessions. The certificate must be renewed each year after successful completion of a refresher course.

Essential Functions

1. Cuts, threads, and assembles a variety of pipe fittings by using a pipe vise and various hand tools to renew sections of pipe and prevent unsafe conditions in the system. Selects type and size of pipe and related materials by using knowledge of systems specifications to ensure satisfactory functioning.
2. Determines proper materials to use by reading schematic drawings of piping systems to ensure continuity and correct operation.
3. Tests various systems by using gauges to ensure that pressures are under control and that no leaks exist.
4. Operates and maintains boilers and related equipment by removing and replacing pieces of insulation, removing and relaying fire brick, installing and maintaining water softeners and ionizers, flushing contaminates from various water vessels, and adding chemicals as needed to control scale and rust build-up in order to reduce maintenance expense and minimize down time of equipment.
5. Adjusts and calibrates all metering devices directly associated with the steam system such as water level controllers, total shut-off valves, gas cocks, automatic gas metering valves, and condensate pumps by utilizing appropriate electrical and mechanical test equipment to ensure the positive functioning of the system.
6. Installs, maintains, and repairs all end use items related to the steam system such as autoclaves, water heaters, radiators, hot air heaters, etc.
7. Removes asbestos from areas of campus by following specific guidelines and procedures and disposing of the asbestos according to University procedures and state regulations.
