Job Summary

Performs preventive and corrective maintenance and construction of roofs in order to keep roofings, gutters, flashings and foundations in excellent condition. Facilitates roof construction projects and oversees large repair projects performed by vendors.

Qualifications

Successful completion of an approved four year, 8,000+ hour apprenticeship program in roofing or four years professional roofing experience, or equivalency. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills also required.

A valid Utah driver’s license or a current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required depending on assigned department.

This position has no responsibility for providing patient care.

Essential Functions

  1. Locates damages and leaks on roofs and makes the appropriate repairs.
  2. Coordinates with vendors and other agencies to complete repairs and roof construction projects.
  3. Performs preventative maintenance on roofs to include repair of frozen or clogged drains and removal of snow and water from roofs.
  4. Waterproofs roofs, building foundations, basements, metal ducts, pipes and flashings to extend life of buildings.
  5. Inspects roof drain grates, removes leaves and debris and replaces damaged or missing drain grates.
  6. Determines best types of roofing materials needed for each project.
  7. Provides input, facilitation and inspection for roof construction projects.
  8. Participates in on-going training and education that may relate to health and safety, building practices and equipment.

Problem Solving

Incumbents operate under minimal supervision. Responsible for keeping repair projects within budget. Oversees extent of damages and determines if repair can be completed in house or whether a vendor is required to complete roof project. Oversees and inspects roofing projects performed by vendors. May function as a crew leader by overseeing personnel assisting with the project. Evaluates repair projects and determines the most appropriate tools and procedures in finishing the project. Oversees project inspection to ensure projects meet established University guidelines and specifications and addresses project and materials problems with vendors.

Comments

The incumbent must operate in accordance with University design standard, project specification, relevant building codes, health and safety regulation, material handling and equipment operation. The incumbent must be familiar with many different kinds of roofs, materials and equipment. This position is on an emergency call list and may be required to respond to emergencies as needed.
