Job Summary

Performs routine and complex laboratory testing using manual and automated methods and procedures useful in patient diagnosis and treatment.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in a biological science; American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) certification as a Medical Technologist or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills are required.

ASCP certification equivalency for this position may be one year of lab experience.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated vaccination requirements, or be approved for an exemption, prior to the first day of work. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Essential Functions

1. Performs specialized assays or procedures.
2. Ensures that attending physician or appropriate individuals obtain patient lab results.
3. Evaluates, troubleshoots problems and makes decisions related to specimen preparation and procedures for preparation.
4. Prepares, labels, and performs quality control inspections on laboratory reagents.
5. Maintains lab work records.
6. Participates in work-related conferences and education.
7. May participate in and be responsible for decisions involving quality control programs, instrument selection and maintenance and reagent purchases.
8. Participates in the introduction of new procedures and in the evaluation of new instruments.

Problem Solving

The incumbent must coordinate with other departments, physicians, residents, or patients effectively to ensure accurate diagnosis, information, and/or scheduling. The incumbent must be capable of troubleshooting and recognizing technical problems as they arise seeking assistance from the supervisor when controls fail and results are not as expected.

Comments

Incumbents in this position may be required to work unscheduled hours and rotate on call responsibilities. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Seldom: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids).

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting. 

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.
