Job Title: General Maintenance Worker

Job Summary

Performs semi-skilled maintenance work that may include building, appliance and shop maintenance work, and assisting maintenance mechanics and trades persons in the performance of their duties as needed.

Qualifications

One year professional work experience performing related duties; a valid Utah Driver's License; and the ability to move up to 50 lbs. and climb stepladders and scaffolding required; Demonstrated oral and written communications skills; customer service skills; and the ability to read and write English are also required.

A basic understanding of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, heating, air conditioning, and welding; and the ability to read and work from wiring diagrams, appliance handbooks, blueprints, and drawings is preferred.

Essential Functions

  1. Assists in repairs to windows by replacing sash cords, repairing broken screens, broken glass, etc. Repairs curtain rods by replacing worn cords and pin holders, mounting rods over windows, or installing new rods in existing areas.
  2. Assists in installing, repairing or replacing an assortment of different equipment ranging from electric switches and fan belts to water pumps and electric motors.
  3. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on equipment such as furnaces, boilers, motors, pumps, switches, etc. insuring appropriate operation of the equipment.
  4. May assist in operating a hand or power auger to clean sewer lines, sinks, toilets, showers, or other clogged lines.
  5. May assist in hanging doors; installing weather stripping, and windows; repairing broken furniture and desks, making repairs to sheetrock, roofs, stairs, floors, etc.
  6. May assist in moving furniture in and out of apartments, classrooms, and offices; may drive light trucks, riding mowers, or fork lifts; may operate winches and hoists, air compressors, and pneumatic jack hammers; and may remove garbage and trash from assigned areas.
  7. May be assigned to work with craft persons on specific assignments requiring journeymen level skills.
  8. May be assigned the responsibility for the swimming pools and the operation of the pumps for water filtration and chlorination system. May also clean the pools, take water samples to test for bacteria, and add chlorine as needed.
  9. May assist in the construction of walkways, parking lots, and minor roads.
  10. May assist in installing, repairing or replacing faucets, washers, seats, valves, and toilet flushing mechanisms.
  11. May assist in painting interiors and exteriors of buildings, sheds, and other structures using hand and power painting equipment.
  12. Uses appropriate hand or machine tools associated with the task assigned. May operate a variety of machines, under supervision, as required in order to complete the assignment.

Problem Solving

This position works under general supervision and is given the authority to prioritize work assignments within the scope of the department's workload.

Challenges encountered in this position center around the tasks assigned to the incumbent to perform. Some problems that may confront the incumbent include working on old equipment that may be outdated; locating spare parts for needed equipment; having to make modifications for new equipment being installed; or performing comprehensive preventive maintenance on a piece of equipment.

Comments

Depending upon the area of assignment, the incumbent may be required to possess hand tools for use in this assignment. This position is generally a training position for the Maintenance Mechanic.
