Job Summary

Designs, fabricates and repairs essential equipment for the University of Utah to include scientific, technical, medical or maintenance requirements.

Qualifications

Journeyman machinist or equivalency required. A welding and silver soldering back ground and a working knowledge of Mill, Lathe, Drill Press, Shear, Brake and general shop machinery and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Dependent upon department of assignment, a valid Utah driver’s license may be required.

This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Essential Functions

  1. Designs and fabricates unique parts for research and development.
  2. Performs specialized repairs; rebuilding shafts, bearings, valves, pumps, etc.
  3. Designs and makes special tools as requested by departments.
  4. Orders parts for equipment repairs when more than machinery work is required to make equipment operable.
  5. May occasionally perform welding or silver soldering tasks.
  6. May be required to provide on the job training to apprentices.

Problem Solving

The incumbent performs the daily responsibilities to interpret drawings, select required materials and determine most efficient type of construction. The incumbent will inform supervision of any required design changes and must reason clearly to solve inherent problems of the job with little or no supervision.
