Job Summary

Performs clerical functions for a patient care unit facilitating the flow of information between medical staff and departments to maximize unit efficiency. Provides administrative input regarding the internal operations of the department.

Qualifications

One year of clerical experience or equivalency; basic computer skills; successful completion of a medical terminology course provided by the hospital within the first year of employment; and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills required.

Must successfully complete power chart training.

Must have strong customer service skills and be able to work in a busy environment.

Some areas of assignment may require a Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card or obtain one within the month of hire.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Essential Functions

  1. Provide communication to hospital staff, patients, families, and visitors.
  2. Provide guidance to care providers on how to enter patient orders into the computer system.
  3. Processes paperwork to order medical treatments and tests; collects/complies/retrieves patient's test and lab results.
  4. Locate physicians for nursing staff and contact physicians to communicate appropriate patient care information.
  5. Orders, stocks and maintains clerical and patient supplies.
  6. Contributes to the development of unit standards to enhance the efficiency of the department's paperwork maintenance.
  7. Transfers information to patient kardex, nurse charts, patient assignment list, lab, x-ray and other unit boards.
  8. May enter charges or orders into the computer.  Orders must be written (only after a computer downtime and with charge nurse approval), approved unit protocol or a supply order.  Medications may not be entered.
  9. In the event of a computer downtime, process paper orders.  Once the downtime event is over, enter the "downtime occurrence order," start and stop time, into each patient's electronic chart.
  10. May work with manager/designee to reconcile unit charges.
  11. Maintains and updates unit activity boards.
  12. Assists in orienting new employees regarding the clerical functions of the unit and updates health unit coordinator's reference manual as needed.
  13. Schedule some patient apointments.
  14. Maintains patient record on unit, as needed.
  15. May transport patients.
  16. Admit/Discharge/Transfer function per unit standard.
  17. Clean and maintain unit equipment, including mobile computer devices.
  18. Other duties as assigned.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
