University of Utah Job Description
Performs journeyman or master electrician level electrical work by exercising the acquired and developed skills and knowledge pertaining to the installation, alteration, maintenance, new construction, inspection and repair of electrical distribution systems (including primary and secondary wiring) and of clinical, laboratory and research electrical devices and equipment, emergency power generation systems and other common electrical items used in the University community.
Journeyman electrician license from the State of Utah or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Experience with electric manholes and underground power distribution systems, proficiency in the use of the various types of electrical test equipment and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
In the hospital positions, a working knowledge of codes and regulations specific to health care facilities is preferred. In the campus positions, a working knowledge of cable splicing and substation maintenance (with its various high voltage switchgear) is preferred.
The journeyman license is obtained through the completion of a comprehensive examination after the completion of a 4 year, 8,000+ hour accredited apprenticeship program.
Dependent upon department of assignment, a valid Utah driver’s license may be required.
This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Incumbents operate with very little direct supervision. Independent judgment is used in choosing materials, tools and procedures in finishing assigned tasks.
Problems encountered in this position may include working with antiquated electrical systems; high voltage primary power sources and maintaining the miles of working and electrical panel boards on campus.
A working knowledge of the hazards and the applicable safety precautions for service of clinical electrical items are important aspects of this job. Unlike typical electrical work, the incumbent may work on circuits that are kept active and functioning due to the unique requirements of the University community (health care facility and research activities). In addition, the electrical safety requirements for individual pieces of equipment must always be foremost in the mind of the person performing the inspection, repair, calibration or test of clinically applied items. Initiative and independent judgment must be exercised in completing assignments according to blueprints, electrical codes and safety requirements.
The incumbent is subject to call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to respond to emergencies that involve the campus distribution system.
