Job Summary

Operates computer and related peripheral data-processing equipment to process software programs and produce printed output of required results. Provides customer service in computing centers.

Qualifications

One year of computer operations experience or equivalency required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Previous customer service experience is preferred.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

Essential Functions

  1. Operates computer equipment, provides basic computer operations and common operating systems usage for both hardware and software in multiple platforms.
  2. Provides customer service and assists users with software operation and output equipment.
  3. Runs daily reports and special programs.
  4. Notifies appropriate technical groups of errors or equipment malfunctions requiring more advanced troubleshooting and analysis.
  5. Calls vendors as needed to repair computer equipment.
  6. Reviews schedules to process critical jobs according to assigned priority.
  7. Interfaces with special operating system software to assist in correcting errors with remote video terminals and prepares special reports to ensure jobs are run efficiently.
  8. Performs preventative maintenance on components, such as cleaning magnetic tape units, keyboards, monitors, disk drives and printers.
  9. Maintains lab computers, printers and the orderliness of the work environment.
  10. Provides programmer with error information when required for proper testing of programs.
  11. Backs-up the system on a daily and weekly basis.
  12. Checks out portable equipment, laptops and projectors.

Problem Solving

The computer operator is expected to be familiar with policies and to be able to properly apply policies. The computer operator performs basic hardware and software troubleshooting and assists customers with computer software and hardware devices. The position composes detailed problem reports when more advanced technical assistance is needed. When the computer operator determines the customer needs assistance outside the scope of their knowledge they will find an appropriate referral and assist in contacting that person.
