Job Summary

Performs carpentry work at the journeyman level by applying skills unique to the trade to make or repair products made of wood or other related building materials.

Qualifications

Successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program in carpentry or four years of professional carpentry experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Excellent customer service skills, demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Dependent upon assigned department, incumbents may be required to have a valid Utah driver’s license.

This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Essential Functions

1. Performs skilled carpentry by following instructions, rough sketches or detailed drawings in the construction, repair, maintenance and alteration of doors, door closures, stairways, partitions and related fixtures.
2. Builds rough wooden structures such as barricades, boxes, concrete forms, scaffolds, fences and wooden frameworks for use in various parts of buildings by applying the necessary procedures and construction specialties in fixing screens, floors, windows ceilings, etc.
3. Repairs and maintains various parts of buildings by applying the necessary procedures and construction specialties in fixing screens, floors, windows, ceilings, roofs, hydraulic door closures, etc.
4. Accomplishes a variety of finishing work by trimming, fitting and installing windows, doors, sheet rock, moldings, baseboards, paneling; laying laminated plastic counters and floor tile; finishing surfaces and joints with sandpaper, scrappers and sanders; attaching hinges, catches and locks; installs carpet and floor and ceiling tiles and performing other finish work as required.
5. Operates woodworking machines such as bandsaws, jointers, mortices, planers and a variety of other machines and hand tools to cut and shape parts for stock or to finish and assemble items already prepared.
6. Works with masons by pouring, finishing and repairing construction essential to cement work.

Problem Solving

Incumbents operate with very little direct supervision. They may function as a lead worker or crew leader on specific assignments by supervising and instructing personnel of a lower or similar classification. Independent judgment is used in choosing materials, tools and procedures in finishing assigned tasks.

Comments

This work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities. Recurring lifting and carrying of moderately heavy items up to 100 pounds and above-average agility and dexterity with the ability to use hand and power tools may be required. The ability to hold, grasp and manipulate small parts and speak clearly and effectively listen to and understand information and ideas as presented verbally and on paper may also be required. There may be risks which require the use of special safety precautions and equipment.
