Job Title: Accounting Clerk

Job Summary

Processes repetitive and nonrepetitive, clerical accounting transactions which require specific knowledge of a wide variety of prescribed accounting codes and classifications.

Qualifications

One year of experience performing accounting functions and preparing related reports, or equivalency; the ability to use standard office machines, calculators and data input terminals; and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills required.

Essential Functions

  1. Performs routine accounting work on a "block of accounts" by following prescribed accounting routines.
  2. Validates bills, and audits commercial invoices to establish compliance of terms and reconciles discrepancies which may occur.
  3. Prepares journal entries required for the entry of data into the general accounting system.
  4. Types statements, reports and correspondence for supervisor's signature according to specified requirements.
  5. Posts directly to ledger via Data Input Terminals.
  6. Compiles financial and business transaction data from source documents to prepare computer-input forms for processing.
  7. Reconciles errors on computer printouts to maintain accounting records.
  8. Reviews source documents for completeness and accuracy.
  9. Posts items in journal, assigning as debits, or credits to appropriate accounts.
  10. Compares computer-printout data against source documents and journal entries to verify accuracy, and prepares input forms to reconcile errors.

Comments

This position is designed for use throughout the University where both specialized and general accounting functions are either the main focus, or an essential part of the department's operations.

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking. 

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.
