13. Transfers (Promotion, Lateral or Demotion)
A transfer occurs when a staff member changes from one job to another and/or from one employing department to another. A transfer may result in a lateral move, a promotion, or a demotion.
LATERAL MOVE
- A lateral transfer results in a change from one job to another job that has the same salary grade.
- A pay increase does not occur with a lateral transfer.
- Exceptions to lateral transfer pay adjustments need to be reviewed and approved by Human Resources, department administration and the cognizant Vice President/Dean.
PROMOTION
- A promotion is the process of changing from one job to another job in a higher grade and may result in a pay increase.
- Department administration should consult with Human Resources to determine if a salary increase is appropriate.
DEMOTION
- A demotion is the process of changing from one job to another job that has a lower grade.
- A pay reduction does not automatically occur with a demotion.
- Department administration should consult with Human Resources to determine if a pay reduction is appropriate.
RESPONSIBILITY:
- Deans, Directors, Department Heads and Supervisors
Responsible for consulting with Human Resources prior to discussing any pay issues with employees who are being transferred. Responsible for notifying employees of pay adjustments finalized with Human Resources.
- Human Resources
Responsible for recommending pay adjustments where appropriate. Responsible for ensuring pay adjustments are processed appropriately, depending upon the type of transfer.
