Job Summary

Prepares make-readies, operates and maintains high-speed medium and large-sized four-color offset presses by utilizing a wide range of mechanical and technical knowledge to reproduce high quality offset printed materials.

Qualifications

Eight years experience operating medium and large color offset presses (25 inch or larger) or equivalency; extensive knowledge of printing theory and principles including pre-press production theory and bindery practices; an understanding of printing papers, inks, fountain solutions, plates, blankets and printing history required. Demonstrated effective human relations and communication skills; and demonstrated excellent problem solving skills are also required.

Essential Functions

  1. Prepares and sets up a high-speed medium and large four-color offset press for all types of printed material such as close register, multiple color work, varying paper sizes and thickness, halftones, duotones, four color process, perforations, maximum and minimum coverage, books and pamphlets.
  2. Mixes colored inks, binders and additives, in order to produce desired colors, tints, shades and ink density with proper drying characteristics on the finished sheets. Mixes fountain solutions, offset plate cleaners, solvents and gums. Deals with problems associated with four-color process: color matching, trapping, tints, etc.
  3. Performs daily, weekly and periodic maintenance on a medium and large offset press.
  4. Performs basic mechanical adjustments and repairs on small or medium offset presses.
  5. Acts in a lead capacity by assisting lower level operators with certain tasks. Acts as technical advisor in specialty areas of printing.
