Job Summary

Responsible for the University's fleet of motor vehicles. Insures that they are properly maintained so as to provide transportation for all University departments on a daily or monthly basis.

Qualifications

One day comprehensive examination; successful completion of an 4 year, 8,000+ hour accredited apprenticeship program, or equivalency; licensed as a Vehicle Mechanic; and five years of previous vehicle mechanic experience required. Previous supervisory and budgeting experience; a license for state inspections; a license for county emissions testing; demonstrated oral and written communications skills, analytical, and troubleshooting skills; and demonstrated customer services skills also required.

Essential Functions

  1. Determines new leasing rates, repair rates and purchasing needs for the Motor Pool within University guidelines.
  2. Makes assignments to subordinate staff and follows up to ensure completion and accuracy.
  3. Acts as liaison between departments on campus and the Motor Pool concerning departmental and university vehicle needs.
  4. Writes specification for the purchase of new and used vehicles working within the budget that has been established.
  5. Oversees the Motor Pool by hiring, training, firing and making salary decisions, performing performance appraisals, and making work assignments to the Motor Pool personnel.
  6. Reviews and completes time sheets and work orders to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  7. Ensures that all apprentice Vehicle Mechanics receive the well-rounded training required by the Apprenticeship Program by scheduling the apprentices on the required types and hours of work.
  8. Audits purchase requisitions and reviews budget reports insuring that needed supplies are ordered, received and paid for within the budget guidelines.
  9. Ensures that all vehicle repairs meet the requirements of the University by supervising, reviewing and controlling all repairs and vehicle purchases in process on the University campus.
  10. Insures that the shop expenditures are maintained within the authorized shop budget.

    Problem Solving

    The incumbent has the authority to make expenditures from his/her authorized assigned budget within the guidelines of University policy. He/she also has the authority to hire, fire, train and make salary decisions on employees assigned to the Motor Pool and to prioritize and make work assignments.

    Problems encountered in this position include identifying the needs of a department in the type of vehicle they need for specific trips; keeping the work load of the mechanics even; and being able to work breakdowns into the schedule in order to maintain good customer relations with the departments.
