Job Title: Nutrition Research Spec

Job Summary

Interviews, determines study eligibility, recruits potential study participants, and draws blood from participants in large epidemiologic research studies. Prepares blood for transport and processing. Assists the Principal Investigator through the successful implementation of protocols and procedures.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Dietetics, Behavioral Science, or a health-related field; two years experience involving research methods, nutrition, interviewing, health science or equivalency; computer proficiency; the ability to work independently; and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills required.

Familiarity with medical records, medical terminology, database tracking systems, and specimen collection is preferred. Must be experience in phlebotomy or be willing to be trained.

Essential Functions

  1. Serves a project interviewer for a research study of cancer.
  2. Abstract medical records from hospitals throughout the State of Utah for the purpose of determining study eligibility.
  3. Assists in recruiting potential participants into the study and performs follow-up correspondence on potential study participants.
  4. Assists investigators and staff with the ongoing field operations of epidemiologic research studies to include paraffin block identification, medical record retrieval and storage, data collection, and data entry.
  5. Conducts computerized interviews with study participants in their homes, recording information on diet, activity patterns, medical history, and other lifestyle practices.
  6. Draws blood and obtains body size measurements such as height and weight.
  7. Prepares blood for processing adhering to established protocol and OSHA guidelines.
  8. Oversees the maintenance of detailed study records; prepares study forms; and completes related duties as assigned.

    Comments

    The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
