Job Summary
Coordinates and supervises the communication division of the Public Safety Department. Individuals in this job code are expected to work 40 hours per week or 1.00 FTE.
Qualifications
Four years of experience that includes supervision, coordinating activities and related dispatch experience, or equivalency; the ability to work independently with little, or no supervision; the ability to speak clear, concise English; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills. Must pass an extensive background investigation.
The ability to effectively receive and transmit messages while working under pressure; demonstrated knowledge and skills with computers; the ability to make quick decisions while working under pressure; and the ability to act quickly and professionally in emergency situations are also required.
POST Dispatcher certification and Emergency Medical Dispatcher certification; working knowledge of the operations of Police Information Network (PIN) and radio communications equipment; and general knowledge and understanding of current electronic security equipment (proprietary alarms, CCTV systems, computers, etc) are preferred.

Essential Functions
Problem Solving
The Coordinator of the Dispatch Division has the authority to make personnel recommendations such as hiring, salary, disciplinary actions for dispatchers supervised. He/she develops work schedules and trains new staff as well as current staff.
Problems most frequently encountered by the incumbent include working extended hours; ensuring the dispatch section functions properly and dealing with high staff turn over.
Comments
The incumbent must maintain a current working knowledge of police, security and radio procedures and must demonstrate the ability to make decisions accurately and rapidly that may affect life or the loss of property.
Must be able to pass a police background check if assigned to the Public Safety Department.
