Job Summary
The Police Major works closely with and assists the Chief Safety Officer (CSO) and Deputy Chief Safety Officer (DCSO) in directing and administering the overall public safety initiatives, as well as promoting a safe and secure environment across the University. The Police Major assists in the direction of the 24/7 operations and provides oversight to the University Department of Public Safety Police Division, ensuring the CSO and DCSO’s vision, programs and directives are carried out, as well as policies, practices and procedures are followed. Additionally, the Police Major assists with strategic planning of police functions, police services, and law enforcement programs; acts as a catalyst between departments, faculty, staff, students, and external entities to ensure continuity and quality of service; and supports the University of Utah’s goals and mission. A Police Major is required to be a certified peace officer through Utah POST.
The University’s Chief Safety Officer is the Director of Public Safety and oversees all University of Utah Department of Public Safety (UUDPS) services. The CSO is responsible for overseeing the University's Department of Public Safety, which includes the following operational divisions: University Police, Campus Security, Health Security, Emergency Management, Emergency Communications, and the central administrative Office of the CSO.

Qualifications
The position requires a Bachelor's Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) in Criminal Justice, Police Science, a related area that benefits public safety administration, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of law enforcement command level experience), as well as a minimum of six years of progressively more responsible management experience and Utah Police Academy Category 1 Peace Officer certification at the time of hire.
Demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills.
Prior experience as a professional law enforcement senior administrator, higher education, working with a diverse community in an urban environment, is highly preferred.
Qualified applicants must successfully complete a thorough background investigation and must be willing to submit to a drug screening test.
Applicants must have demonstrated previous experience of performing the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
Leadership training, such as the F.B.I. National Academy, Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command or similar programs is highly preferred.
Administrative familiarity with CAD-RMS and similar law enforcement related systems is highly desirable.

Essential Functions
1) Provides direct support to the Chief Safety Officer (CSO) and Deputy Chief Safety Officer of Police Services (DCSO) in the oversight and operations of the University Police Division, ensuring policies and practices are followed across all areas of campus.
2) Assists with the direction and oversight of the operations and strategic planning of the University Police Division; acts as a catalyst between departments, faculty, staff, students, and external entities to ensure continuity and quality of service; and supports the University of Utah’s goals and mission.
3) Builds trust and demonstrates commitment for people of many backgrounds regarding safety.
4) Aid in assuring appropriate programs and resources are in place to meet the compliance needs of the University, and administers federal, state, and local safety law to ensure the University remains in compliance.
5) On behalf of the CSO and/or DCSO, in partnership with the UUDPS Directors, acts as a liaison with all stakeholders and partner agencies on matters pertaining to safety.
6) Oversees and supervises police personnel; provides strategic direction by setting short and long-term goals. Ensure high customer satisfaction by analyzing complaints, concerns and suggestions and providing appropriate mentorship and follow-through.
7) Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships (such as Student Affairs); participates in departmental and university-wide committees; may represent the DCSO as a designee; supports management and supervisory staff through professional development opportunities and/or educational programs.
8) Collaborates effectively with other functional areas of the CSO Office and Department of Public Safety.
9) Acts as a liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
