Job Summary
This position is responsible for providing acupuncture treatments. For treating patients using tools such as needles, ear seeds, pellets, and topical herbal liniments and for utilizing manual techniques such as shonishin, acupressure, cupping, shiatsu and tuina to help promote, restore and maintain patient health.
Qualifications
Current license to practice Acupuncture in the state of Utah. Current active certification from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card through American Heart Association or obtain within one month of hire. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Essential Functions
1. Verifies medical records including the physician’s orders for acupuncture, reviews their medical file for contraindications/precautions for treatment.
2. Collects medical history and general health and life style information from patient.
3. Analyzes physical findings and medical history to make diagnoses according to Oriental medicine.
4. Works with each patient and patients guardian to develop a treatment plan and strategy based on their diagnoses as well as individual needs.
5. Explains procedure and discusses individualized treatment.
6. Inspects area to be treated looking for edema, blisters, and/or rash, and if present, reports issues to physician/nurse before beginning treatment.
7. Provides prescribed treatments as determined by the patient’s treatment plan.
8. Observes and assesses patient for any unexpected or undesirable physical/emotional reactions. When necessary, suspends treatment, and provides appropriate intervention. Reports adverse reactions to physician/nurse as indicated.
9. Maintains detailed and complete records, health care plans and prognoses.
10. Educates patient and patients guardian on topics such as ergonomics, stretching, exercise, nutrition, the healing process, breathing, and relaxation techniques.
11. Evaluates treatment outcomes and makes further treatment recommendations as necessary to further promote, restore, or maintain health.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
