Job Title: Medical Practice Assistant

Job Summary

Provides medical assistance to patients throughout their visits, assists providers with patient information, performs standard medical procedures and administrative duties.

Qualifications

Certification as a Medical Assistant from a certified medical assistant education program; completion of the Medical Practice Assistant training internship as provided by the University of Utah Hospital and Clinics within six weeks of hire; Limited Practical Radiological Technician (LPRT) licensure by the State of Utah obtained through successful completion of a formal limited radiology technology training program required; Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card or obtain one within one month of hire. Demonstrated computer skills, phlebotomy skills, lab specimen handling and processing skills, and ability to take quality radiographs. Completion of I.V. competency program and demonstrate proficiency within 90 days of hire required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

This position is responsible for providing care to the following patient populations (please check as appropriate):

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Essential Functions

  1. Performs Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived laboratory procedures, EKGs, splinting, x-rays and checks patient’s vital signs.
  2. Completes patient registration, assists patient with co-pays and account balances, schedules appointments and assists patient to exam room and remains with patients during their appointment.
  3. Manages electronic medical records and phone message pool in a timely and efficient manner.
  4. Assists provider by collecting and documenting medical information in the electronic medical record system.
  5. Administers immunizations or other injections as ordered by provider and maintains information.
  6. Monitors, maintains and cleans patient exam rooms, unit areas and equipment.
  7. Reconciles daily cash reports and assists with other administrative clinic duties.
  8. Obtains pre-authorization and referrals from insurance companies for procedures and treatments.
  9. Attends and completes in-service training.
  10. May assist with patient and family education by providing educational material and general information.
  11. May perform supervisory duties and assist in training new employees.

Problem Solving

This position assists providers by providing patient care under the supervision of a licensed clinician. Assistance from professional staff is required to solve problems related to patient care. Challenges for this position include prioritizing patient work load and the needs of the clinic. This position assists providers in an efficient manner to provide excellent customer service and patient care.

Comments

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Seldom: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting. 

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.
