Job Title: Veterinary Technician

Job Summary

Performs animal nursing duties in the surgical service area. Monitors and documents animals before and after surgical procedures. Performs radiology, anesthesiology and surgical duties. Prepares and maintains operating rooms and equipment.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree in Animal Technology, a related field or equivalency required. Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, diseases, anatomy and physiology of numerous animals, pharmacology, determination of dosage and routes of administration. Must be familiar with animal husbandry, care and handling of animals. Human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

National or State Board Certification for Veterinary Technician preferred.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

Essential Functions

  1. Performs animal nursing duties and assists with surgical procedures.
  2. Prepares animals for aseptic surgery by assisting with anesthesia induction.
  3. Monitors animals during surgical procedural by monitoring anesthesia, equipment and procedures.
  4. Assesses animal conditions following surgery and monitors the post anesthesia recovery.
  5. Prepares and maintains operating rooms and surgical instrument packs for aseptic procedures.
  6. Cleans and sanitizes room and equipment.
  7. Sets up and troubleshoots equipment.
  8. Documents procedures per study protocol or Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
  9. Collects specimens, prepares and interprets results.
  10. Performs radiographic procedures and develops x-ray film.
  11. Maintains individual training file.

    Problem Solving

    This position has multiple surgical responsibilities that must be performed simultaneously. This position is responsible for accurately documenting charges and time incurred to each account.

    Comments

    Procedures must be performed in accordance with SOP’s or study protocols. Deviations must be approved by appropriate person. All work must also comply with the rules and procedures of the regulatory agencies.
