Job Summary

Provides internal regulation of controlled substance by ordering, receiving, distributing,and recording controlled substance use for the University Hospitals and Clinics.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in science or a related area, or equivalency; demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology within one year of employment; and demonstrated human relation, effective communication, and computer literacy skills required.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Essential Functions

  1. Restocks patient care units, selected hospital departments, and research labs with controlled substances.
  2. Audits narcotic paperwork and monitors drug usage for quality improvement activities.
  3. Compounds and prepackages controlled substance specials.
  4. Records and maintains controlled substance records in accordance with State and Federal laws.
  5. Restocks the in-patient pharmacy with non-restricted controlled substances; restocks the out-patient pharmacy and the IV Center with controlled substances.
  6. Orders and receives controlled substances; maintains drug inventory; checks for out-of-date items.
  7. Uses the department’s prepackaging and automated dispensing equipment; analyzes diagnoses, and corrects problems related to the maintenance of these devices.
  8. Stocks and maintains the department’s automated dispensing equipment.
  9. Ensures that controlled substances are ordered by authorized individuals.
  10. Researches, investigates, and reports incidents of controlled substance diversion by licensed health care professionals to the Department of Professional Licensing.
  11. Coordinates with the University Narcotic division and the Attorney General's office when prosecuting substance abuse criminal cases.

Problem Solving

This position perform duties under the general supervision of a Pharmacist. Incumbents are authorized to order,restock, and audit use of medications with the potential for diversion and/or abuse. Challenges encountered by the incumbent include assisting in the investigation of incidences involving potential controlled substance abuse; assisting with the University Narcotic Division and the Attorney General’s office when it prosecutes criminal cases; and operating and maintaining automated dispensing devices.

Comments

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
