401(a) Plan and 403(b) and 457(b) Supplemental Retirement Savings Plans

Through the University's retirement plans, you may enroll in a large variety of Mutual Funds. Each investment provider offers a three-tier investment structure described below. This structure was developed to assist you in directing your retirement investment options.

One-Step Investing
Each investment provider offers a series of life-cycle funds designed for investors who want a simple yet diversified approach to investing for retirement. These professionally managed mutual funds gradually become more conservative as you approach your target retirement date. You select the life-cycle fund most suited to your needs based on when you expect to retire. For example, if you will be age 35 in 2010 and expect to retire at age 65, you would select the 2040 Fund. As the year 2040 approaches, more conservative investments will be substituted for the aggressive investments in the fund.

Core Funds
Each investment provider has proposed 20-30 highly competitive investment options to help University of Utah employees create and manage a diversified portfolio. The core fund options include investment types from all asset categories with varying degrees of risk. You may want to consider these investment options if you are comfortable diversifying and selecting investments on your own.

Build-Your-Own
In addition to the core funds, each investment provider offers a wide variety of additional investment options for those who want to have more involvement in choosing investment options.

Brokerage Windows
Each investment provider has a brokerage window available in the 403(b) and 457(b) supplemental retirement plans. A brokerage window is not available in the 401(a) employer-funded plan. Through the brokerage window you will have access to other mutual funds and ETFs. You may incur additional fees if you use a brokerage account.
