Employee Health Care Plan – Eligibility and Enrollment Eligibility

If you are employed by the University in a benefit-eligible position at 50% FTE or greater, you are eligible to participate in the Employee Health Care Plan.
You may also enroll your eligible dependents. Eligible dependents include:

  • Your spouse; and
  • Your or your spouse's children by birth, placement for legal adoption or foster care, or legal (court-appointed) guardianship granting full guardianship rights, who are under age 26.

Coverage may be continued for an enrolled dependent child at age 26 in certain circumstances. Your request to continue coverage must be received by the Benefits Department within 90 days of the date of the child’s 26th birthday. Consult the Summary Plan Description or contact the Benefits Department for information.

Enrollment
If you enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (the first 90 days following the date you are hired into a benefit-eligible position), coverage will begin retroactive to your date of hire.

If you do not enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period, you may enroll during Open Enrollment held each year during May or if you experience a Status Change Event (e.g., marriage, divorce, birth or adoption of a child, loss of other coverage, etc.) If you enroll during Open Enrollment, coverage will be effective on the first day of the new Plan Year (July 1).

You can change your Provider Network Option and/or Plan Design Option or add or drop Dental Coverage only during Open Enrollment. Changes made during Open Enrollment are effective on the first day of the new Plan Year (July 1). If you experience a Status Change Event you may enroll in coverage, drop coverage, or add or drop dependents. To make one of those changes, submit the changes through UBenefits within 90 days of the date of the event.
