Parental Leave Request
As of 01/01/2019, the University of Utah has adopted a Parental Leave policy benefiting the staff employees.
See the full Policy 5-200: Leaves of Absence (Health-Related).
For additional information, please review the Frequently Asked Questions for Parental Leave or

HIGHLIGHTS OF PARENTAL LEAVE:
- To be eligible for Parental Leave, you must also meet the eligibility requirements for FMLA leave. You must have worked for the University for at least one year AND you must have worked 1,250 hours within the previous 12 consecutive months. FMLA time will run concurrently with any Parental Leave taken.
- Parental Leave can be taken continuously or *intermittently for the following reasons:
- The birth and care of a child
- Placement of a child with you for adoption
- Eligible employees may take Parental Leave for up to 6 weeks and will be paid 50% of their normal pay. The remaining time will come from the employee’s own sick and vacation hours. University policy requires that you use accrued sick and vacation time during FMLA and Parental Leave; however, you may retain up to 10 days of vacation with a written request.
- You are required to provide a 90-day notice prior to taking Parental Leave.
- Because FMLA time runs concurrently with Parental Leave, your job is protected and you may retain health coverage at employee rates.
- After Parental Leave ends, employees will continue on FMLA leave for the remaining 6 weeks unless they plan to return earlier. If you plan on returning to work early, please contact your supervisor and the HR Absence Management Team as soon as possible.
REQUESTING PARENTAL LEAVE:
Employees should complete request forms for both FMLA and Parental Leave since they will be used at the same time. Completed forms should be submitted to the HR Absence Management Team as soon as possible.
