You Are What You Eat
With all the information available in the media about nutrition, what’s good and what’s not, everyone knows that good nutrition plays a large role in maintaining good health. Your eating habits affect everything from your healthy heart to the energy you have to enjoy life. A healthy lifestyle including eating well and exercising, leads to better quality of life. But what’s a healthy lifestyle? There are all kinds of resources out there from diet books to newspaper articles to your best friends, brother’s wife. One diet, like one size, does not fit all. We’re here to help you learn what your healthy lifestyle can be. There are general guidelines that will help everyone - and information specific to an individual. Take advantage of the WellU Program and find out what will benefit you.
Dietary Guidelines for Americans:
- Consume a variety of nutrient-dense foods and beverages within and among the basic food groups while choosing foods that limit the intake of saturated and trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars, salt and alcohol.
- Maintain body weight in a healthy range, balance calories from foods and beverages with calories expended.
- Engage in regular physical activity.
- Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables each day. Select from all five subgroups (dark green, orange, legumes, starchy vegetables and other vegetables) several times a week.
- Consume less than 10%of calories from saturated fats and less than 300 mg for cholesterol daily. Keep trans fat consumption as low as possible.
- Choose fiber-rich fruits, vegetables and whole grains often.
- Consume less than 2300 mg (approximately 1 teaspoon of salt) of sodium per day.
- Those who drink alcoholic beverages should do so sensibly and in moderation.
- Practice food safety to avoid food borne illnesses.
