What if I recruit and identify my own temporary employee outside the UTemps labor pool?
If you recruit and identify your own temporary employee(s) and wish to use UTemps in the hiring process, the following steps must occur prior to the temp working in your department:
- Have the individual apply online for UTemps.
- UTemps will interview the individual and complete new hire paperwork..
- UTemps will have the new hire complete a background check and drug test if one has not been completed previously.
- Once the employee has cleared the background and drug test, he/she will be ready to work in the department.
- When will someone from UTemps contact me regarding my request?
You will hear back from a UTemps Representative within 1 business day to discuss the details of your request.
- How quickly can I have a temporary employee start?
For a typical administrative role, UTemps can have someone start within 2 business days. If the role is more specialized and you would like to see resumes or interview candidates, this will affect the start time accordingly.
- How do I change the schedule or length of an assignment?
Just notify a UTemps Representative at UTemps@utah.edu and they will communicate this information directly to the employee.
- What if I am dissatisfied with my temporary employee's performance?
Please let a UTemps Representative know as soon as any concerns arise in areas of attendance, punctuality, professionalism, or any other area of overall performance. A UTemps Representative will then address the issue immediately, provide feedback, and communicate future expectations to the employee. If necessary, UTemps will replace your UTemp with a new employee.
- How will the temporary employee be paid?
UTemps Employees use Kronos to report their hours. The payroll process is the same as it is for other regular University Employees. UTemps are required to set up Direct Deposit. See UTemps Payroll for more information.
- How will I ensure my needs are met?
Let us know as far ahead as possible when you have a need for temporary staffing. More lead time will allow a larger pool from which we can source candidates for your specific needs. If you need to staff a project or have a peak hiring season approaching, please contact us immediately.
- What if I want to hire my temporary employee permanently?
Wonderful! Please notify the UTemps staff immediately if you are interested in hiring your temporary employee. In order for a UTemps employee to be placed in a permanent position, the hiring department must:
- Post the position by completing a position requisition form
- Have the job posted for a minimum of 7 days internal to the University
- Have the UTemps employee apply for the job
- Have your HR Representative run a salary calculation on your UTemp and close your open position
- Complete an electronic Personal Action Form (ePAF) transferring (XFR) the UTemps employee into your department
Because UTemps employees are not full-time benefitted, a 3-day internal to department posting will not suffice.
If you already have your position posted and have identified our UTemps employee as the best match for your selection criteria, you need to:
- Be sure the UTemps employee applies to your specific open job
- Have your HR Representative run a salary calculation on your UTemp and close your open position
- Submit an ePAF transferring (XFR) the UTemps employee into your department
