How to Read Your Paycheck Stub

The numbers listed below corespond to the numbered boxes on the check stub shown above.
1. Identification Box: This box includes your name, employee id, the home department, and the location associated with the home department.
2. Tax Data: The marital status (married or single) and allowances claimed on the W4. If you have requested that an additional tax amount, either federal (F) or state (S), be taken from your check, will also be indicated here. Please contact the Tax Services Office at 581-3428 with any questions regarding taxes.
3. Hours and Earnings: Each earnings code is itemized and totaled at the bottom of this box in the Total section.
YTD Earnings: This refers to tax calendar year to date earnings.
4. Taxes Box: This box itemizes the federal withholding, FICA-MEDHI (Medicare tax), FICA (social security tax) and state withholding current and year to date figures.
5. Before-Tax Deductions: Deductions for medical and dental insurance, parking permits, and any before-tax deductions are listed in this box with current and year-to-date amounts.
6. After-Tax Deductions: All after-tax deductions are listed in this box, including current and year-to-date amounts.
7. Employer Paid Benefits: This box indicates the benefits your employer is paying. Included are current and year to date totals.
8. Paid Leave Hours: This box includes the starting balance, of hours earned in the calendar year, hours taken in the calendar year, adjustments, and the ending balance for vacation, sick, and personal preference hours. Vacation and sick hours accrue on the 15th of each month and are available for use as of the 16th of each month. Please contact the Benefits Office at 581-7447 with questions regarding accruals.
9. Net Pay Distribution: Includes check or advice number, the type of direct deposit account that funds are being distributed to, the account number the funds are posting to, and the deposit amount.
