How to Read Your Paycheck Stub

The numbers listed below corespond to the numbered boxes on the check stub shown above.
1. Identification Box: This box includes your name, employee id, the home department, and the location associated with the home department.
2. Tax Data: The marital status (married or single) and allowances claimed on the W4. If you have requested that an additional tax amount, either federal (F) or state (S), be taken from your check, it is now indicated.
3. Hours and Earnings: Each earnings code is itemized and totaled at the bottom of this box in the Total section. See How to Read Your Earning Codes for details about each earnings code.
YTD Earnings: This refers to calendar year to date earnings.
4.Taxes Box: This box itemizes the federal withholding, FIXA-MEDHI (medicare tax), FICA (social security tax) and state withholding current and calendar year to date figures.
5. Before-Tax Deductions: Deductions for medical and dental insurance, parking permits, and any before-tax deductions are listed in this box with current and calendar year-to-date amounts.
6. After-Tax Deductions: All after-tax deductions such as GLI (group life insurance) are listed in this box, including current and calendar year-to-date amounts.
7. Earnings Distribution Box: This box indicates the funding source(s) you were paid from.
8. Vacation Hours Box: This box includes the starting balance, hours earned in the calendar year, hours taken in the calendar year, adjustments, and the ending balance for vacation hours. Vacation hours accrue on the 15th of each month and are available for use as of the 16th of each month. Please contact the Benefits Office at 581-7447 with questions regarding accruals.
9. Sick Time Hours Box: This box includes the starting balance, hours earned in the calendar year, hours taken in the calendar year, adjustments, and the ending balance for sick hours. Sick hours accrue on the 15th of each month and are available for use as of the 16th of each month. Please contact the Benefits Office at 581-7447 with questions regarding accruals.
10. Personal Preference Box: This box includes the starting balance, hours earned in the calendar year, hours taken in the calendar year, adjustments, and the ending balance for personal preference hours. Personal Preference hours are accrued at the beginning of the calendar year and do not carry forward into future calendar years. Please contact the Benefits office at 581-7447 with questions regarding accruals.
