Speaking Compensation
Overtime and Compensatory Time-Off
Overtime pay and compensatory time-off (also referred to as
“comp time”) only apply to employees in non-exempt positions.
An employee must work more than 40 hours in a work week to be
eligible for overtime or comp time. The work week at the University starts on Saturday at 12:01 a.m. and ends the following Friday at midnight.
Overtime is paid at time and one-half the regular hourly rate of pay. For example, if an employee’s regular wage is $10/hour, the overtime rate of pay is $15/hour. In this example, if the employee works 10 hours of overtime in a work week, he/she will receive $400 of regular pay ($10/hour times 40 hours) and $150 of overtime pay ($15 per hour x 10 hours).
Comp time is similar to overtime but instead of receiving pay for working more than 40 hours in a work week, the employee accumulates time off that can be used at a later date. Comp time is calculated at one and one-half times the hours worked. So, in the example above, the 10 hours of overtime would translate into 15 hours of comp time (10 hours times 1.5).
Supervisory approval must be obtained prior to working overtime. All regular, overtime and compensatory hours must be recorded and tracked in Kronos. More information on this subject can be found on at
http://www.hr.utah.edu/comp/proc/sect_4.php, by visiting our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page at
http://www.hr.utah.edu/faq/getDeptQuestions.php?dept=Compensation or by contacting the Compensation Management Department at 581-6206.
On The Horizon . . .
- Job Families will be added to the Compensation website in early 2007. A Job Family contains positions performing similar type of work, such as accounting or pharmacy. This addition will make it easier to locate job descriptions.
- Market Value Reports will be distributed to University administrators in January 2007. The reports show how University positions are paid relative to similar positions within the University as well as to the external marketplace.
