ApplicantSearch: Winning Both Sides of the Skilled Applicant Shortage
Presenter: John W. Howard, Ph.D., Performance Resources, LLC

The basic demographics of the workforce are changing as never before. Combine the Baby Boom, the Birth Dearth, and the Longevity Boom, and you have 3 powerful forces of change that will shape the workforce and our ways of dealing with it for the next 50 years, or more. The Department of Labor estimates that the American workforce will need 18 million people with new 4-year college degrees over the next 5 years, but will only produce 12 million of them.
  • If your business needs degree-holders (or any other highly skilled workers), where will you find them?
  • IGiven that you will probably have to pay more, since the demand will exceed supply, how can you ensure that you get maximum productivity out of the ones you do hire?
  • IHow will you keep them with you, when your competition is trying to hire them?
  • IHow can you pinpoint your search for candidates, and not waste hours reading thousands of resumes to find a few who are suitable for your positions?

This session will explore a new tool that provides answers to all of those questions, and is affordable for businesses of any size. It will help candidates and employers find suitable matches for skilled workers in any field.

Survey Results from the Study of Dual-Career Academic Couples
Presenter: Andrea Henderson, Stanford University

Stanford University's Clayman Institute for Gender Research is engaged in a national, multi-year study examining the condition of dual-career academic couples in leading US research universities. Between November 2006 and January 2007, the Clayman Institute administered an on-line survey at thirteen leading U.S. private and public research universities. Nearly 30,000 full-time faculty were surveyed (with a 30.4% response rate) in an effort to collect data on academic couples as well as explore attitudes, policies, and practices surrounding couple hiring. The Institute's "Dual-Career Academic Couples" study will culminate in policy recommendations aimed at helping universities recruit and retain greater numbers of women in leading faculty and administrative positions. Restructuring university practices will help transform the way universities do business and grow academic cultures where women, too, can flourish.
