Job Title:  Anaplastologist

Job Summary

Designs, fits and fabricates artificial prostheses for facial defects following a physician’s order. Determines retention type upon patient examination. Takes impressions of the defect site and contralateral side, designs and creates sculpture of absent anatomy for optimal fit and placement, determines prosthetic material and creates mold for processing, and accurately colors prosthetic material to match the adjacent skin and contralateral side. Assures form, function, and appearance of the prosthesis to patients’ satisfaction, and instructs patient on care and maintenance of the facial prosthesis.


Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in a health science field or equivalency and three years of direct clinical experience or scientific research in monitoring or coordinating studies; clinical or related experience required. Knowledge regarding National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements as well as demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills required. The incumbent must have knowledge of materials science, anatomy and be skilled in art.

Essential Functions

  1. Creates facial prostheses (ears, noses, and eyes) using modern techniques and materials. Specifically, incumbent takes impressions, sculpts the absent anatomy, fits the sculpture, fabricates a permanent mold, processes the prosthetic material, and colors the material to match the patients’ skin.
  2. Orders all supplies, materials and equipment needed for production of prostheses. Maintains inventory.
  3. Fabricates prostheses following NIH and FDA regulations.
  4. Documents patient information and photographs.
  5. Communicates with third party payers to facilitate prior authorization of services.
  6. Develops clinical testing protocols and creates instructions for patients regarding the proper use and care of prostheses.
  7. Designs and develops all patient and public education material.
  8. May act as the University\'s representative for this field or specialty area when contacting other departments and outside organizations.


Problem Solving

The incumbent decides how best to accomplish the daily requirements of various clinical trials; determines and delegates workload, prioritizes, and establishes systems needed to carry out the specific clinical trials. Efforts of multiple departments or disciplines must be coordinated to ensure the effective follow through of the clinical trial and compliance of all involved. The incumbent functions independently under minimal supervision, following FDA, National Cancer Institute (NCI), IRB and other regulatory agency guidelines and seeking council from the Principal Investigator as necessary.
