Job Summary
Coordinates and trains staff in performing animal care activities in compliance with safety, research and budgetary guidelines, and provides general and technical care for laboratory animals.

Qualifications
Associate\'s degree in a biological science field or equivalency required. Four years laboratory animal experience which includes two years supervisory experience; certification as an Animal Technologist (LATG) with the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS); and demonstrated human relations and communication skills required.Bachelor\'s degree in a biological science field preferred.

Essential Functions
- Supervises animal care activities, ensuring quality control measures for proper animal care and research techniques.
- Reviews activities and records to ensure compliance with State, Federal and University regulations.
- Trains staff and ensure skills and certifications are maintained.
- Performs animal husbandry activities, animal identification nd health evaluation, biological sample collection, and administers medications according to State, Federal and University regulations.
- Monitors area budgets and ensures that expenditures are within approved guidelines.
- Performs human resource activities including evaluating performance, interviewing and hiring staff, disciplining and assisting employees in goal setting for assigned staff.
- Schedules daily work shifts and coordinates staff assignments based on department needs.

Problem Solving
There are significant risks associated with zoonotic diseases as well as biohazardous chemicals, treatments and radioactive isotopes that are ever present in laboratory facilities. While all technicians are exposed to these biohazards in one degree or another the Technologist is given the added responsibility of training personnel and maintaining these facilities in a safe manner. There is considerable health and monetary risk associated with the research animals that the Technologist must consistently monitor.

Comments
Errors in following verbal and written instructions regarding the basic care of the animals could jeopardize the health and safety of employees and animals. Such errors may result in injury, illness or loss of research.Employees face potential exposure to animals that may bite, kick, scratch or be diseased. Employees lift, carry, push and pull heavy loads on an intermittent basis and work with chemicals and automated equipment.
