Provides care for laboratory animals and their environment through animal husbandry and keeps records according to State, Federal and University regulations.

Qualifications
Six months work experience, demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Ability to move up to 50 pounds may be required in some areas.Certified positions are also required to have certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) with the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or Veterinary Technician certification. Previous experience in a veterinary or animal laboratory research setting preferred.

Essential Functions
- Sanitizes caging systems, autoclaves, animal rooms and support areas using automated and manual equipment.
- Feeds and waters animals.
- Performs routine animal care maintenance including attaching ID bands and general grooming.
- Handles and restrains animals according to instructions and protocol.
- Maintains routine record keeping of such items as environmental conditions and animal inventory.
- Observes and communicates animal health conditions to lab personnel and notifies supervisor of abnormal conditions.
- Distributes supplies to various research areas.
- May be responsible for euthanasia, limited anesthesia, physical exams and administering medication according to veterinary direction.

Problem Solving
The position provides basic animal care and maintains routine records according to clearly defined standard operating procedures, federal guidelines and regulations. Those with ALAT certification have the authority to work in the animal rooms unsupervised whereas without certification a certified animal laboratory staff member must accompany the incumbent. Continual training is provided and work is reviewed on a regular basis through observation of procedures and review of records to ensure compliance.

Comments
Errors in following verbal and written instructions regarding the basic care of the animals could jeopardize the health and safety of employees and animals. Such errors may result in injury, illness or loss of research.Employees face potential exposure to animals that may bite, kick, scratch or be diseased. Employees lift, carry, push and pull heavy loads on an intermittent basis and work with chemicals and automated equipment.
