Outpatient Clinic Trainee Opportunity for Pre-Med Students

This is a temporary, non-benefited position approximately 6 months in duration.

This is a trainee position designed to provide opportunities to Pre-Med students looking to get direct hands on patient experience in order to get into Medical School. Under the supervision of a licensed staff , the Outpatienc Clinic Trainee will render basic healthcare to the patient and family/significant other. It will also entail clerical duties as needed to help facilitate patient flow through a clinic.

Job Summary

Current Basic Life Support Card or completion of certification within six months of hire. Demonstrated customer service and effective communication skills required.

The incumbent will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the clinic's baseline skills within six weeks of hire. Care is appropriate to the population served. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description. One year of health-related experience is preferred, but not mandatory.

Essential Functions

  1. Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to clinic procedures and provided training.
  2. Obtains and records patient temperatures, pulse rates, blood pressure, weight and height measurements and patient responses to standardized medical history questionnaires according to clinic procedures.
  3. Reports all observed or transmitted patient concerns/changes in condition to a licensed staff member.
  4. Performs CLIA Wavered Lab tests such as urine dip stick, Hgb, Hct, finger stick, glucose, hemoccults, hCg and reports results to the appropriate personnel. May perform patient phlebotomies in accordance with clinic procedures and physician orders after specialized training.
  5. Acts as a chaperone for health care providers during patient examination as requested and assists with approved procedures.
  6. Performs delegated approved procedures under the direct supervision of a licensed staff member.
  7. Assists in patient and family education by providing educational material and general health information to patients and family members.
  8. Monitors and cleans assigned patient examination rooms, unit areas and unit equipment reporting outdated supplies, stock levels and restock set levels of items and necessary equipment repairs.
  9. Answers telephones, reports telephone messages, schedule appointments, diagnostic tests and procedures as requested by licensed staff members.
  10. Assists in routine clerical functions such as filing of medical information in patients records, locating and compiling clinic charts, obtaining medical records from other providers and entering charges for billing purposes.
  11. Attends and completes mandatory inservices including infection control, safety, CPR , equipment usage and on equipment procedures according to hospital and clinic policies.

Problem Solving

Performs limited patient care tasks and procedures under the supervision of a licensed staff member. Assistance from professional staff is required to solve problems related to patient care.

Comments

Faces exposure to potentially dangerous contaminated bodily fluids, blood, used needles, and other contaminants as part of the daily hazards of the job. Physical demands of standing and walking most of the time. Moves and lifts patients. Involves reaching and handling equipment.

Provides care to infants, toddlers, pre-schoolers, school-age children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
